Performance Standard 1: Professional Knowledge

The teacher demonstrates an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, and the developmental needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences.

Artifact 1: Chocolate Adventure

My calculus students conduct a lab activity as a culmination of their study of finding the volume of a solid of revolution.  This activity helps students understand the relevance of the calculus they have learned and how it can be applied in everyday situations.  Students are instructed to find the volume of a Hershey Kiss using two different methods, one of which involves calculus.  The two methods include finding the volume by displacement and finding the volume using calculus. Once they have completed the data gathering portion of the activity, they must analyze the results and discuss their observations.

I assign students in groups of three to conduct this activity.  Not only does this allow the data-gathering aspect to be completed in a timely manner, but more importantly promotes discussion regarding a desired technique to ensure accurate results.  I enjoy watching the students as they realize what the calculus provides.  It gives me pleasure to see that they have made the connection between two very different methods and gain a deeper understanding for situations where calculus is required.

Artifact 2: “Strengthening the Saw”

I find that taking classes to extend my knowledge in mathematics also helps me be more aware of my students’ needs in the classroom.  It is important to study concepts over and beyond what I teach my students so that I can more adequately prepare them for their future classes in mathematics, and also provide more relevance to the material they are currently studying.

Attending workshops and taking classes also helps me to stay abreast of current trends in teaching, especially those involving the use of technology.  I get exposure to new ideas and activities that enhance my lessons, thus making the learning experience more exciting for my students.
