Performance Standard 3: Instructional Delivery The
teacher effectively engages students in learning by using a variety of
instructional strategies in order to meet individual needs.
Reflexive Statement: Through the use of the
online resource “The Calculus Phobe” students are introduced to the intuitive
concept of a limit in a practical, entertaining method. It also reinforces the neighborhood concept
I talk about during the lesson. This
method has worked well in aiding student retention and understanding of the
more formal explanations of text and notes.
This lesson incorporates graphical and numerical displays developed by
me via the use of TI-InterActive software and incorporates emphasis of the
pitfalls of the graphing calculator as well as application and need of the
Four Prong approach to learning calculus.
The ability to enhance lessons and notes via the use of
TI-InterActive, Math Type, and CuteWriter software as well as online clips
exhibit my growth development in the use of technological and online
resources to aide to student understanding.
“The Calculus Phobe” may also be incorporated into other lessons on
continuity, intermediate value theorem, and derivatives as needed. Artifact 1:
Lesson Finding Limits Graphically and Numerically (SOL: APC.2, APC.3, and
APC.4) Class Notes: Numerical/Graphical
Analysis of Limits Artifact 1A:
Worksheet: Numerical/Graphical Analysis of Limits Artifact 1B: Solutions: Worksheet Numerical/Graphical Analysis
of Limits Course: Laboratory Calculus:
MTH 175 Calculus of One Variable Description: The lesson focuses on the
intuitive concept of a limit, proper limit notation, how to determine a limit both numerically
and graphically, and when a limit fails to exist. Introduction to the formal
definition is provided along with formal proof notation. The lesson provides required
concepts for college calculus as well as AP calculus curriculums. Also included is a worksheet utilizing
concepts delivered for student practice using their TI-84+ calculators for
analysis of problems and solutions posted on Blackboard for student access. Artifact 2:
