Performance Standard 5: Learning Environment The
teacher uses resources, routines and procedures to provide a respectful,
positive, safe, student-centered environment that is conducive to learning. Reflexive
Statement: At the onset of classes,
student expectations are clearly defined and communicated to students. Time
is taken to go over class and student expectations, class goals, the future
importance of the subject, grading procedures and daily maintenance
procedures. Communication with
instructor is stressed and students are encouraged to ask questions, use
study groups as well as available posted online resources. Instructor tutorial times and other
available tutorial services are provided.
Being aware that at times, circumstances arise that may inhibit a
student from completing work on time; I devised a form that the student must
complete the day the assignment was to be turned in which is left in place of
completed assignment. The “Pink Slip”
serves three-fold by allowing me to know quickly which student’s work is
missing; provides the student an option to have instructor accept the
assignment late even though the grade is lowered; and provides signed
documentation should grade issues arise.
Slips are hung on the bulletin board for easy student access. Artifact 1&1A:

first day of class. Class
guidelines, procedures, and expectations are conveyed and emphasized.
Discussion of how late work is treated and “Pink Slip” policies are addressed. Pink Slip allows students to turn work in late,
though lowered one letter grade per day late. Reflexive
Statement: The room is organized and
arranged in a manner for students to simultaneously view the projected notes,
white board, TV monitor for calculator view screen usage, and teacher. In as much as feasible, desks are arranged
so as to provide minimum crowding.
Various cow gifts are displayed to enhance the subject of “Cow-q-lus” and use of the “cow-q-lator”. Important messages are displayed as needed
either on the bulletin board or entrance glass. Random items of interest such as an
extending math concept or math comics are also displayed as well as
motivational posters. A designated
yellow basket is provided for placement of graded papers submitted by
students. Limitations due to room size
and/or class enrollment decrease the ability desired for instructor movement
throughout the class. Artifact
