Performance Standard 2: Instructional Planning

The teacher plans using the Virginia Standards of Learning, the school’s curriculum, effective strategies, resources, and data to meet the needs of all students.

Biology Syllabus

The syllabus for Biology is one indicator of instructional planning.  It clearly states the learning objectives and course content that are planned for the entire school year.  Different methods of assessment are also noted in the syllabus.  All students are given a course syllabus and I go over it with them on the first day of class.  I have an overall plan for the instructional delivery, course content to be covered, and grading methods for the entire course. My expectations of the students are also covered in the syllabus and verbally.

Ecosystems Project

The students are assigned an ecosystems Power Point project during the second semester of Biology.  The students are allowed to choose which ecosystem they wish to research.  However, no more than 2 or 3 people may choose the same ecosystem so that all the different ecosystems are covered.  They may be as creative as they choose with their Power Point slides. They are given credit for the information as well as creativity.  This is another example of a different instructional method that is not pencil and paper oriented.  The students usually enjoy this project as they have the opportunity to learn about an ecosystem that they are interested in and their excitement always shows during their presentations to the class.
